.Zip Files

Downloading .zip files and loading savegames

zipiconzipicon
All of the walkthrough text files and savegame files on this site are compressed, or "zipped," in order to save server space, speed downloading and in some cases to group several documents together.

To download one of these zipped files, left click on the link. You should be given the option to open or save the file to disk. Choose save and specify the location where you want to save the file—such as your hard disk, or a floppy. (Some browsers provide additional options, so check your browser's help file if you're not sure what to do.) Once the file is saved, make sure you have a utility for extracting, or "un-zipping," this type of file installed on your system (see Opening .zip Files, below). Then double click on the file's icon to extract it.

You can extract the walkthrough text and graphic files into any folder you like. Then use a word processor or Windows WordPad accessory to read the text files and a graphics editing program or web browser to view the .gif (graphics) files.

I recommend the following procedure for savegame files:

  1. Download the file (as above).

  2. When you extract the savegame files, put them in a new folder rather than directly into the game directory. You don't have to do this, but it will prevent you from accidentally overwriting your own saved games. Plus you can label the folder so you'll remember the levels or scenarios where the saves take place.

  3. IMPORTANT: Be sure not to overwrite any existing saves that you want to keep. Move or copy them from the directory where the game program file is (see no. 4) into another folder.

  4. When you're ready to play your new savegames, move them into the directory where the game program file is. For TR3, the default directory is C:\Program Files\Core Design\Tomb Raider III. For TR2, it's C:\Program Files\Core Design\Tomb Raider II. For Tomb Raider 1 and Unfinished Business, it's C:\Tombraid. (To distinguish between the two, TR1 savegame files have names like "Savegame.2" and Unfinished Business "Saveub.2".) If you changed the default location when you installed the game, it will be wherever the Tomb3.exe, Tomb2.exe, Tomb.exe or Tombub.exe file is located.

  5. Launch the game and your new savegames will be available.
For more information on savegame files, see here.

Opening .zip Files

Windows ME will automatically open most .zip files, allowing you to copy or move the compressed files within just as you would any other file. If you need help, access Windows Help & Support from the Start Menu (or by pressing F1 from the desktop). Then search for the phrase 'compressed file.' (NOTE: Windows ME won't open .zip files within .zip files, such as the large archives containining savegames from all the different levels of a game. Here it may be more convenient to install WinZip or download the individual .zip files for each level.)

If you don't have Win ME, you'll need an archive utility. One of the best and easiest to use is WinZipTM. The WinZip web site has a good basic information section, frequently asked questions and online support. Several versions of the program are available, including an evaluation version that you can download and try out for free.

Macintosh users can use StuffIt (which also opens the .hqx files used for some of my Macintosh saves), Zip-It or another similar utility.

If you don't like WinZip for some reason, there are many other similar programs available. StuffIt (the StuffIt Expander is available FREE for Windows and Macintosh), PKZip and Drag & Zip are two of the most popular. There are also a number of freeware and shareware .zip utilities. Use a search engine or visit Shareware.com for info. (I use WinZip, so I don't have any experience with or opinion about the others.)

If you have trouble downloading or opening any of these files, please let me know.
